Introduction

UChicago Medicine (UCM) is one of America’s leading academic medical institutions. It comprises the Pritzker School of Medicine, a top 10 medical school in the nation; the University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division; and the University of Chicago Medical Center, which recently opened the Center for Care and Discovery, a $700 million, 10-story specialty medical facility that focuses on cancer, digestive diseases, neurosciences, advanced surgery, and high-tech medical imaging. Twelve Nobel Prize winners in physiology or medicine have been affiliated with UChicago Medicine. The mission of the Office of International Programs includes:

  • To coordinate the care for patients and their families who travel from all over the world to receive treatment at UCM;
  • To transfer the expertise of our physicians, nurses, and administrators to help hospitals abroad improve their delivery of care;
  • To make UCM a safe and welcoming place for patients whose first language is not English.

Notable Physicians

Valluvan Jeevanandam, MD

Professor of Surgery; Chief, Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery
Dr. Valluvan Jeevanandam specializes in the surgical management of heart failure, and is an expert in high-risk cardiac surgery. He has performed more than 1,000 heart transplants -- including the total artificial heart -- and countless cardiac surgery procedures, including transmyocardial laser revascularization, complex valve reconstruction, and minimally invasive coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
Dr. Jeevanandam has a special interest in treating patients traditionally considered inoperable. He has repaired damaged hearts in several patients awaiting transplant, enabling those patients to forgo transplantation. He also has successfully performed transplants involving patients who do not fit the standard criteria for transplant.

John Fung, MD, PhD

Professor of Surgery; Chief, Section of Transplantation; Director, Transplantation Institute
With more than 30 years of experience, Dr. John Fung is a renowned leader in the field of organ transplantation, including liver, kidney, pancreas, islet and intestinal transplantation. Dr. Fung also performs procedures for bile duct cancer and obstruction, gallbladder and biliary tract diseases, and hepatobiliary malignancies.

John M. Cunningham, MD

Professor of Pediatrics; Physician-in-Chief, UChicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital; Director, Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Dr. John M. Cunningham is an internationally known expert in the treatment and research of childhood cancers and blood diseases. He has particular expertise in treating leukemia, lymphoma, immunodeficiencies, sickle cell disease and thalassemia. He is a recognized leader in the field of pediatric stem cell transplantation, and has developed novel uses for this life-saving treatment.

Michael R. Bishop, MD

Professor of Medicine; Director, Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Program
Dr. Michael R. Bishop specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of lymphomas and leukemias. In particular, he cares for patients with hematologic malignancies that have not responded to first-line treatments. He previously served as a senior investigator and as the clinical head of stem cell transplantation for the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

Husam H. Balkhy, MD

Associate Professor of Surgery; Director, Minimally Invasive and Robotic Cardiac Surgery
Dr. Husam Balkhy is a pioneer in the field of minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery. He specializes in the treatment of coronary artery disease, heart valve disorders, atrial fibrillation and other cardiac diseases, using robotic and less invasive techniques. He is one of only a handful of surgeons in the world with extensive experience in performing robotic totally endoscopic beating heart coronary bypass grafting (TECAB). He also has a large experience with robotic mitral valve surgery, and robotic atrial fibrillation surgery as well as minimally invasive (port access) aortic valve surgery.
