Introduction

Cincinnati Children’s is a full-service, nonprofit, pediatric academic medical center that provides a wide range of clinical services and specialties dedicated to improving the health of children. Our pediatric specialty care is nationally recognized for medical excellence; US News & World Report ranked Cincinnati Children’s third in the United States in its 2016-2017 Best Children’s Hospitals report, with top specialties including gastroenterology and GI surgery, nephrology, diabetes and endocrinology, orthopaedics, pulmonology, urology, neurology and neurosurgery, cardiology and heart surgery, and cancer. Our Proton Therapy Center is the first in the United States based at a pediatric medical center. Our treatment of rare and complex conditions has drawn children from over 100 countries. We are the home of major developments and discoveries, such as the Sabin oral polio vaccine, the development of artificial blood, the heart-lung machine, new lung surfactant replacement, the rotavirus vaccine, and the latest in genomics and molecular medicine. We rank among the top in the United States in research grants from the National Institutes of Health to pediatric institutions.
