Hospital for Special Surgery

Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is ranked #1 in the US for orthopedics for the seventh consecutive year by US News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” (2016-2017 rankings) and #2 for rheumatology. Orthopedic surgical procedures that are rare at other hospitals are routine at HSS, and our outstanding record of safety and quality attracts patients from all over the world for the best possible health outcomes. For 34 consecutive quarters, HSS has scored in the 99th percentile on “Likelihood to Recommend” – a key indicator of customer satisfaction in many industries – when compared to similar hospitals in the Press Ganey database. In addition, our infection rate is one of the lowest in New York State. HSS is the first hospital in New York State and one of only 37 hospitals in the US to achieve the Magnet® designation for nursing excellence four consecutive times.

HSS has approximately 340 active medical staff members and 39 operating rooms. In 2016, our surgeons performed nearly 31,000 surgeries. The Hospital has one of the most sought-after orthopedic residency programs in the country.

HSS is the official hospital of, and our physicians work with, more than 20 professional and collegiate teams and sports organizations. HSS has also been designated a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence.

Patient Services

The International Center works to facilitate the clinical and related needs of international patients and their families. Our services include scheduling and confirming medical appointments, preparing cost estimates, coordinating billing and payment arrangements, assisting with accommodations and transportation, and arranging medical interpreters. From the beginning, our staff assists you in arranging a referral to the most appropriate physician for your condition. We will then work with you and your family members to arrange for all appointments, services, and amenities you will need before, during, and immediately following your hospital visit.

The Center will arrange an initial referral for you with an appropriate specialist, as well as any needed diagnostic and subsequent appointments. Team members will also coordinate any necessary support services during your time here. A staff member will meet you and your family upon your arrival at HSS and remain in contact with you throughout your hospital experience. We act as a liaison between you and your physicians to address any issues or concerns prior to and following treatment. Our staff also regularly checks on your progress during and after surgery, and we make sure you know where to go for physical therapy and other post-operative care during your recovery.

International Center staff members speak several languages and also work with HSS Language Services to provide skilled medical interpreters to assist during your clinical appointments and hospital stay. There is no charge for medical interpreter services provided at the hospital.

All documents must be sent to the International Center in English, and all HSS medical and billing documents are in English. The International Center does not translate documents; however, we can refer patients to external translation companies.
